Melisse Buland's Obituary

Melisse Siew Buland, formerly of Temple, Texas, passed away Friday evening, December 1, 2006, in Fort Worth.  Born on September 24, 1985 in Morgantown, West Virginia, she was 21 years old.

Melisse was a student at Trinity University in San Antonio and was working as an NRI-GIS data analyst on contract with the USDA-NRCS in Fort Worth.  She was a 2003 Top 5% graduate of Temple High School in Temple, Texas.  She previously attended Travis Middle School and Thornton Elementary School in Temple, Washington Elementary School in Huron, South Dakota, and Central Elementary School in Morgantown, West Virginia.  An exceptionally gifted athlete, she lettered in soccer, cross country, track, and tennis during high school.  Soccer was a passion throughout her life, and she played on school and select teams from age four until she joined the nationally top-ranked women’s soccer team at Trinity.

Melisse was loved by all for her sharp and insatiably curious mind, disarming wit, and terrific sense of humor.  She was a fun-loving, risk-taking “outdoor girl,” and the only one in her family who could juggle.  She devoured books, movies, philosophy, and music, taught herself how to play guitar, rode motorcycles, and was a bit of a Sudoku prodigy.  An accomplished photographer, Melisse’s work was inspiring to others with bipolar disorder.

Her friends and family will miss her laughter, her pranks, her smile, her kind and loving spirit, and everything she was and did that was so uniquely Melisse.

She is survived by her parents, David and Tiew-Eng Buland of Crowley, Texas, her brother Alton and sister Khim, her grandparents Virgil and LaVonne Buland of Chandler, Arizona and Mr. and Mrs. Chew Kai Heng of Malacca, Malaysia, as well as relatives from Minnesota to Malaysia and countless friends.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, December 5 at Greenwood Funeral Home at 3100 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76107.  A funeral service will be held in Fort Worth at 1 pm on Wednesday, December 6 at Grace Lutheran Church at 7900 McCart Avenue.

A memorial service will also be held in Temple, Texas at 2 pm on Thursday, December 7 at 4204 Hickory Road at Covenant Lutheran Church, where she was a member.
